The Armour and Shield

In the first reading ( Zephaniah 2:3) at solemn mass today, the passage began, ” Seek the Lord all you humble of the earth.”  The Gospel and Homily continued in a similar spirit,     ” Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”  (Matthew 5:3)

These are provocative lines.  It is not to say that God favors the poor over the wealthy or weak over the strong.  When things are going well in our lives, when we  feel strong in mind and body, it is easy to forget what is seemingly intangible or invisible.  Our strength can create a blind spot.  In those moments our vulnerabilities are concealed.

Or are they?

Vulnerability is our armour and shield. It protects us by keeping us open.   The realization that we are not invincible and that our acknowledge of our fallibility opens the door to paths of opportunities.
