A Little Respite

On Saturday, I was able to get away with a special friend to the Finger Lakes.  We hopped in his sports car and in 4.5 hours made it up to rural, raw beauty – full of waterfalls, wine and Bed & Breakfasts.

Typically I spend my weekends at the beach with my family but this was something different.  The proprietor of the Black Walnut was a natural host and an amazing cook.  As soon as we checked in, he made sure we were sampling the local wine and eating the cherries right from the trees in his backyard.

Later, we headed to Americana Vineyards for a bbq. We rocked out to 4 bands playing everything from bluegrass to oldies and 70’s covers.  The Vineyard was celebrating their 2nd birthday and they did it with chutzpah – and an amazing fireworks display at the end. We spread our blanket on the grass, opened  a couple of bottles of wine and  I gave him a PG-13 striptease  when the fireworks started…Enough to get his own fireworks going…

If you are a wine-lover, oenophile, like myself, you will be in for a pleasant surprise.   Although many of the wines are not widely distributed and thus diffcult to get in NYC, some rival their French and CA counterparts.  A special thank you to the Silver Fox for introducing me to Swedish Hill.  They make a delicious sparking and wonderfully balanced Dry Riesling. I picked up a few while I was there… 🙂
